Vivienne is at the stage where everything goes in her mouth, so it is very important to me that the toys she is playing with are free of toxins like BPA, phthalates, and PVC. I’ve found that the easiest way to make sure of that is to avoid plastic toys altogether and go for wood and natural rubber toys instead. Check out a list of some of our favorite brands below. Follow the link to visit The Mindful Home blog for a very in-depth guide to non-toxic baby products.
1. Haba – Haba toys are made in Germany with beech and birch wood, water-based stains, and conform to European safety standards. 2. Plan Toys – According to their website, Plan Toys are “made from natural rubber wood trees that no longer produce latex. To keep the wood pure, no fertilizer is added to the soil three years prior to cut the trees down.” They also use formaldehyde free glue, organic color pigment, and water based dyes. 3. Grimm’s Spiel und Holz Design – Grimm’s is also a German toy company that makes their products out of wood, natural oil, and water based dyes. 4. Vulli – This French company is the maker of the famed Sophie the Giraffe. Sophie is made of 100% natural rubber and food grade paint. 5. Hevea – Hevea uses 100% natural rubber and organic cotton to make their products, which includes pacifiers, teethers, and toys. 6. Oli and Carol – 100% natural rubber is used for this line of toys also. 7. Etsy – Etsy.com is a great source for handmade wooden toys. Just search “wood baby toys.” Two of our favorite shops are OhJustDandy and manzanitakids.
