Applications

Polymers, also known as polystyrenes, are a group of synthetic aromatic
polymers made from the monomer styrene. They are among the most widely produced
polymers globally due to their versatility, adaptability, and
cost-effectiveness. In this article, we will look at the different types of
polystyrene polymers and their major uses and applications.



Types of Polystyrene polymers



There are several main types of polystyrene polymers categorized based on their
chemical composition and structure:



- Polystyrene (PS) - The simplest polystyrene polymers made up solely of vinyl
benzene monomer units linked together. It is a rigid, hard plastic with good
clarity and is widely used for food packaging and protective packaging.



- High-impact polystyrene (HIPS) - Contains small rubber particles that give it
greater toughness and impact resistance than regular PS. Used for products like
toys, appliances, and automotive components.



- Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) - Produced by grafting polybutadiene
rubber and polyacrylonitrile onto a PS backbone. Very tough and impact-resistant
with good heat resistance. Common in housings, appliances, and automotive
parts.



- Styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN or A-SAN) - Copolymer made of styrene
and acrylonitrile monomers. More durable than PS and transparent with good
chemical resistance. Used for labware, glazing, foils and in engineering
applications.



- Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) - Elastomeric copolymer containing both
styrene and butadiene that gives it rubber-like properties. Important in tires,
footwear, and adhesives.



Applications in Packaging



Packaging is a major application area for Styrenic
Polymers
due to their lightweightness, moldability, and good barrier
properties. Polystyrene is extensively used in food packaging like disposable
cutlery, plastic cups, plates and containers due to its clarity and
affordability. HIPS produces durable packaging for electronics, household goods
and toys that need to withstand distribution handling. ABS and SAN resins are
also used in rigid packaging of consumer durables.



Construction Applications



In the construction industry, extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) board is a
popular building insulation material. Its closed-cell structure provides
excellent thermal insulation and moisture resistance for cavity walls, under
concrete floors and roofs. Extruded acrylic sheets made using polystyrene
polymers like SAN are used as roofing and glazing materials due to their
strength and transparency. ABS resin is used to mold durable drainage pipes,
plumbing fixtures and sanitaryware accessories.



Electrical and Electronics Uses



The electrical industry exploits Styrenic Polymers for their good electrical
properties and machinability. HIPS and ABS resin produce housings and
enclosures for electrical appliances, consumer electronics, telecom hardware
and industrial controls. Additionally, high heat styrenic copolymers give
structurally stable insulators for electronic devices and wiring. In circuit
boards, impact-resistant grades of SAN find application as electrically
non-conductive substrates.



Automotive Components



ABS resin has emerged as a major choice for producing interior and exterior
automotive trims, instrument panels, and under-the-hood components due to its
high durability and heat resistance. HIPS and ABS composites find extensive
applications as automobile fascia, grills, wheel covers, and gear shifter
components. Polystyrene polymers also produce protective casings for electronic
control units along with infotainment system and lighting components.
