If you're planning to dive into A Song of Ice and Fire, you're in for a treat! There are currently five books in the series, and two more are planned by George R.R. Martin. The five books released so far are: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons. The books are definitely more detailed than the show, with a lot of additional content, characters, and subplots that were either shortened or omitted on screen. For example, some characters are given much more depth, and there are plotlines that never made it to TV. If you want a clear overview of the number of books and what to expect, I found this blog post that answers exactly how many books are in the Game of Thrones series.
