U.S. officials brace for powerful hit from Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew is the worst natural disaster to hit Haiti since the earthquake in 2010, prompting Haitian officials to postpone the presidential election ...

Officials in Haiti say the Hurricane Matthew death toll now stands at 108. The toll will most likely rise when rescue teams reach villages in the hardest hit areas.

"We’re still assessing the impacts, but we know of floods, landslides and continuous heavy rains in some areas of the south. We also have heard of destroyed houses, streets and bridges, dead livestock and destroyed livelihoods," said CARE Country Director Jean-Michel Vigreux.

The Ministry of Interior reported over 28,000 damaged homes.

Matthew, currently a Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds, is expected to make landfall in Florida early Friday. Authorities have called for the evacuation of more than 2 million residents on the East Coast.
