Ammonia Crackers Market Growth Opportunities, Key Trends, and Forecast

The Ammonia Crackers Market is gaining significant traction as industries seek efficient methods to produce hydrogen. Ammonia cracking, a process that decomposes ammonia (NH₃) into hydrogen (H₂) and nitrogen (N₂) using catalysts and heat, is becoming a crucial technology for decarbonization and clean energy transition. With the growing emphasis on hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier, the demand for ammonia crackers is expected to surge in the coming years.

The ammonia crackers market has seen major developments such as business expansions, partnerships, collaborations, and joint ventures by key players operating in the market. According to BIS Research analysis, most of the companies preferred business expansion as a strategy to further increase their growth in the ammonia crackers market. Companies such as Siemens Energy, Air Liquide, thyssenkrupp AG, Haldor Topsoe A/S, and KBR, Inc have majorly adopted strategies such as partnerships.

Recent Developments in Ammonia Crackers Market

  • April 2021: Uniper launched the "Green Wilhelmshaven" initiative to establish a major hydrogen hub in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. The company is currently conducting a feasibility study and plans to build a green ammonia import terminal equipped with an ammonia cracker for green hydrogen production. The terminal will be integrated into the planned hydrogen network.

  • June 2023: Proton Ventures conducted multiple ammonia cracking studies for clients and is actively participating in research consortia. The company is developing centralized ammonia cracker solutions for pure hydrogen production, similar to natural gas processing plants. Additionally, Proton is working on decentralized ammonia crackers, which improve energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness by not requiring complete hydrogen purification. The next step is to build a commercial pilot plant for ammonia cracking. In collaboration with Switzerland-based Casale S.A., Proton also completed a FEED study for a renewable ammonia facility.

  • December 2021: Novatek and Uniper signed a term sheet agreement for the long-term supply of low-carbon ammonia to serve markets in Germany and North-West Europe. As part of this, Uniper is planning an ammonia import terminal in Wilhelmshaven, which will include storage infrastructure and an ammonia cracker powered by renewable energy.

  • September 2022: Syzygy Plasmonics, LOTTE Chemical, LOTTE Fine Chemical, and Sumitomo Corporation of Americas formed a partnership to test Syzygy’s fully electric, photocatalytic ammonia cracking reactor. The reactor is expected to be installed and operational by late 2023 at LOTTE Chemical’s facility in Ulsan, South Korea.
