Intelligent Power Modules: Enabling More
Efficient Power Control Systems
What are Intelligent Power Modules?
The evolution of power electronics has led to the development of intelligent power modules (IPMs). An IPM integrates key power components like insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), freewheeling diodes, and driving and protection circuits onto a single substrate. This level of integration results in compact and reliable power modules that can simplify circuit designs and improve overall system efficiency.
IPM Technology Advances
Over the years, IPM technology has advanced considerably. Early Intelligent Power Module mainly integrated IGBTs and diodes but offered limited protection and monitoring functions. Modern high-performance IPMs now integrate many additional features that deliver increased functionality. IGBT and diode chips with lower on-resistance have improved conduction losses. Advanced gate driver chips precisely control switching waveforms to reduce switching losses. Integrated current, voltage and temperature sensors provide real-time device monitoring. Protection circuits continuously check device parameters and can safely turn off the module if limits are exceeded. This helps improve the overall reliability of power conversion systems.
