Magnesite - A Key Raw Material for Industries

Magnesite is a naturally occurring magnesium carbonate mineral with the chemical formula MgCO3. It is a soft, white or colorless hydrous magnesium carbonate. Magnesite is mined as an ore of magnesium and a source of magnesium carbonate. It occurs as veined and disseminated deposits and is often associated with other magnesium minerals like dolomite and serpentine.

Major deposits of magnesite occur mainly in the form of veins and mantos within peridotite and serpentinite rocks. Some significant magnesite deposits are found in Turkey, Iran, Portugal, Greece, Austria, China and the United States. The Turkish and Chinese deposits are the largest in terms of reserves. Smaller deposits also exist in Italy, Australia, Myanmar, and other parts of Europe and Asia.
