                                                                                  Life Doesn't End with Diabetes


I'm a firm believer that diabetes can a long-term, progressive condition. It won't go away, and your diabetes control is as much about what you eat as what you do.

Type 1 diabetes is triggered by a mutation in the glucocorticoid receptor gene. Your body does not make enough glucocorticoid hormones to keep Blood Sugar Down. That is why many with type 1 diabetes have to inject insulin, and your body stores excess insulin as fat.

For type 2 diabetes, your pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or the cells that produce insulin don't work properly. The good news is that in addition to diet, there are many other things you can do to lower your risk of developing diabetes. The first is to maintain a healthy weight. People with diabetes often get so caught up with avoiding high-fat foods that they avoid more healthy carbohydrates, like potatoes, whole-grain bread, and other carbohydrate-rich foods.

This can prevent Type 2 diabetes.

Exercise is also key. The American Diabetes Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. That doesn't mean running a marathon. It means walking briskly, cycling or swimming, or any activity that raises your heart rate.

Some evidence shows that people who exercise — even just once a week — reduce their risk of developing diabetes.

People who start an exercise program when they're young and continue for at least 20 years reduce their risk of developing diabetes by 74 percent, the New England Journal of Medicine reported in 2015.

Studies show that the benefits of regular aerobic exercise can increase with regular exercise over time. If you're in your 40s and haven't been active in a while, starting now could result in a 26 percent reduction in your risk of developing diabetes in your 80s.

Finally, reduce your risk of developing diabetes by talking to your doctor about your diabetes risk, and starting the conversation about what you can do to lower it. That's what I always tell people: you don't need to reach your ideal weight to be healthy. I've lost weight and kept it off over the years. But I did it by continuing to eat healthfully and exercise, as well as taking medication for my diabetes.
