Non-Vascular Stents: An Overview of Usage and Types

Stents have revolutionized medical procedures by
providing minimally invasive treatments for various conditions. Though stents
are predominantly used for vascular procedures like angioplasty, they have
other important non-vascular applications as well. This article explores the
usage of non-vascular stents and the different types available.

Non-Vascular Applications

Non-Vascular
Stents
have enabled less invasive alternatives to open surgeries in
several non-vascular areas. Some of the major non-vascular applications where
stents are used include:

Bronchial Stents

The lungs have a complex network of bronchial tubes that become blocked in
conditions like lung cancer or other obstructions. Bronchial stents are placed
through the mouth or throat into the lungs to keep blocked or collapsed airways
open. Made of various metals or silicone, they help restore breathing and are
easier to place than surgery.

Biliary Stents

The biliary system consists of bile ducts that carry bile from the liver to the
small intestine. Bile duct obstructions can cause serious problems if not
treated. Endoscopic or surgical placement of expandable mesh stents helps drain
bile, relieve jaundice, and avoid complex surgeries in biliary conditions.
