Ecotricity Awarded the Badge of Disruptive Firms for Changing the Energy Market

Virgin Media Business Disruptor list has named Britain’s most famous green energy company as one of the top ten disruptive companies in the UK. It has declared the private energy supplier Ecotricity as one of the UK’s 10 most disruptive companies. The award is given to companies that create new markets by transforming the existing markets through remoulding or disordering the traditional business models.

Ecotricity has been a pioneer in generating and supplying green energy and, has over two million customers as of now. The company is a popular name in the British energy market as it is the first total green energy company. Founded in 1995, the company has been voted for its reliable customer service and the least number of customer complaints for six years in a row. By offering one tariff and one price, it simplifies the billing and payment process, which relieves the customers from facing complicated energy bills.

The company changed the energy market dynamics by offering 100% green energy and has the lowest carbon footprint amongst all the energy companies in the UK. It has reached a wider customer base by providing 300 EV charging points at petrol stations and by creating an ecobond scheme, which allows the customers to be a part of its capital and eventually get benefited from the work of the company.

With a mission of changing the way electricity is generated and utilised in Britain, the company has been doing conservation work for two decades. It operates on a business model that uses customer’s energy bills to create funds for developing more green energy. Although, it cannot be termed disruptive in its true sense, it has certainly changed the way business is done in Britain and thus, being part of the disruptive list is valid.

Speaking on being considered as one of the UK’s ten most disruptive firms, Dale Vince, the Founder of Ecotricity, said that “It’s fun to be named on this new list of disruptive companies – we don’t mind wearing that badge. It’s actually quite exceptional, since we’ve been doing this for twenty years, to still be considered disruptive. It’s our independence that’s enabled this – having no shareholders means we’re free to pursue our mission to build a Green Britain in any way we think is right.”

Shay Ramani, the founder of energy comparison expert FreePriceCompare.com expressed his views on Ecotricity being listed in top ten disruptive companies in the UK. He said that “Well, this is not only amusing, but quite a novel approach to honour a company that has been consistently generating green energy in Britain. Ecotricity has been one of the badge holders of creating a greener world and has influenced the energy market in the most positive way.”

He added that “By creating opportunities for people to invest and benefit from the company, it forms a connection with its customers. The company has established a very good business model that not only speaks business but also affects the customers and nature in a positive way, which makes it a big success in the energy industry. Ecotricity certainly deserves the ‘game changer’ award by every means!”
