Cuil, a new search engine created by former Google employees, will begin processing search requests this week after its launch.
Created by Anna Patterson, Cuil, pronounced "cool", has a search index that spans 120 billion Web pages, three times more than Google.
Patterson's last search engine was successful, prompting Google to purchase its technology to incorporate to their own search engine in 2004. In 2006, Patterson quit Google and then began to embark on a search engine that would compete with Google.
After $33 million in venture capital, Patterson, her husband, Tom Costello, and two other former Google engineers Russell Power and Louis Monier have created Cuil.com, a self-proclaimed "cool" search engine.
Patterson sold her search engine Recall in 2004 after joining Google, where she was teamed up with Power. Monier was the chief technology officer of AltaVista, considered by many to be the best search engine in the 1990s prior to Google. He then worked for Google and also developed the search engine for eBay.com.
Costello helped to build the search engine Xift before working for IBM Corp., where he worked on an "analytic engine" called WebFountain
Cuil.com's search result page is presented in magazine form, contrary to Google's list approach. Cuil is geared more towards content than quantity.
Through May, Google held a 62 percent share of the U.S. search market followed by Yahoo at 21 percent and Microsoft at 8.5 percent.
As of 11:12 am, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) stock has dropped $11.23 (2.28%) to $480.75. Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) stock was at $20.47, down 66 cents (3.12%), while Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is at $25.91, down 25 cents (0.95%).
The Cuil search engine is located at http://www.cuil.com.
