Virgin Galactic Unveils White Knight Two Aircraft for Personal Space Travel

Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites unveiled its highly-anticipated White Knight Two aircraft on Monday.

The White Knight Two's unveiling by Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson and aircraft designer Burt Rutan took place in Mojave Air & Space Port in California's Mohave Desert.

The White Knight Two mothership, also written as WhiteKnightTwo, will be accompanied by the Space Ship Two, which will mount itself between the mothership's twin fuselages.

The SpaceShipTwo is the successor to the Ansari X Prize-winning SpaceShipOne, which was designed by Rutan., who heads Scaled Composites, LLC. In the summer of 2004, it, along with mothership White Knight One, became the first privately funded craft to send a human into space.

After receiving $10 million for the aircraft, Rutan teamed up with Branson, the chairman of the Virgin Group, to fully produce the prototype

The SpaceShipTwo is over 70 percent complete with test flights scheduled for later this year. Virgin Galactic wants to fly 500 people into space in the first year for $200,000 a person. If successful, Virgin Galactic will equal the amount of travelers that have been sent to space in 45 years.

The total trip, from White Knight Two's takeoff to SpaceShipTwo's unpowered landing, will last about 2 1/2 hours.

In January, they announced plans to build 40 to 50 craft. Virgin Galactic then had an astronaut corps of only about 200 people, with 80 of them having passed medical and centrifuge tests. The list of interested parties is at 85,000, so this idea may take off immediately.
