Exxon Mobile Tops 2009 Fortune List for Highest Revenue in 2008
Exxon Mobile has bumped Wal-Mart Stores from its familiar spot atop the Fortune 500 list for highest revenue in 2008 for publicly traded companies.
Despite the fall of oil prices Exxon brought in $442.85 billion in revenue during 2008 to comfortably hold off Wal-Mart which totaled $405.6 billion in revenue for the same period. Wal-Mart had held the top spot on the list for six of the last seven years.
Coming in at third on the Fortune 500 list was Chevron while ConocoPhillips and General Electric rounded out the top five.
Exxon was also the most profitable company of 2008, bringing in $45.22 billion, far surpassing Chevron who held the number two spot with $23.93 billion in profit. Wal-Mart earned $13.4 billion in profit, good enough for fifth on that list, behind number three Microsoft and number four General Electric.
Fortune called 2008 the worst year for the top 500 companies as earnings fell 85 percent, the largest drop in the their list’s 55-yaer history.
