A vehicle explosion in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province has claimed the lives of four UK soldiers on Tuesday. Among the dead was the UK’s first woman casualty in the country.
A fifth soldier was injured in the attack but has been listed in stable condition.
According to British authorities three of the soldiers were killed immediately and the fourth was pronounced dead after arriving at Camp Bastion.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown commented on the soldiers saying, “They were undertaking the most difficult missions in the most dangerous of countries.”
"Our troops are a second to none, the best in the world. They are on the noblest of missions; they are fighting for freedom for the Afghans in their own country and for the world in protecting us from terrorism.”
Over the past 10 days nine UK soldiers have died in Afghanistan. Since 2001 there have been 106 British casualties.
