MDC Sec. Gen. Tendai Biti Released on Bail, Mugabe Says Presidential Election Won’t be Postponed
Tendai Biti, secretary general of Zimbabwe’s main opposition party Movement for Democratic Change, was released on bail Thursday several weeks after he was nabbed and charged with treason.
Biti’s release comes one day before Zimbabwe is scheduled to take to the polls in what is being called a meaningless presidential run-off election. MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew from the election on Sunday after expressing his lack of faith in a free and fair election and fears of violent outbreaks launched by the current government.
Tsvangirai was scheduled to face off against current President Robert Mugabe but that appears unlikely despite international calls for the president to postpone the vote.
Mugabe has said he would never allow Tsvangirai or the MDC to assume control of the country and has declared it was God who gave him the presidency and only God can take it away. Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since the country won its independence from the British in 1980.
Several countries have already noted they would not recognize Friday’s vote and many have taken steps to impose economic sanctions against Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party.
