In May, two months after taking office, Berlusconi appointed a ‘garbage czar’ to address the problem that has plagued the region for more than 15 years.
Long-term plans to solve the garbage woes in the southern Italian city will include implementing a viable system of garbage collection, incineration, and recycling, and opening new dump sites and landfills in the region.
