At the height of the crisis, residents clashed with police over the burning of rubbish in the streets, and school officials closed schools to protect children from the noxious fumes from the mounting garbage piles.
In May, two months after taking office, Berlusconi appointed a ‘garbage czar’ to address the problem that has plagued the region for more than 15 years.
Long-term plans to solve the garbage woes in the southern Italian city will include implementing a viable system of garbage collection, incineration, and recycling, and opening new dump sites and landfills in the region.
