Russia Continues Air Strikes Near South Ossetia, Georgia Declares State of War
Russian jets bombarded the Georgian town of Gori as the conflict over South Ossetia carried over into a third day of fighting on Saturday. According to Georgian officials at least 60 civilians were killed in the strikes.
The conflict began Thursday night as Georgian forces moved into the breakaway region of South Ossetia in an attempt to reclaim the area that had declared de facto independence in 1992. That decision was part of a campaign promise made by Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili who vowed to regain control of his country’s breakaway territories.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev responded to Georgia’s move into South Ossetia by moving troops into South Ossetia’s capital city of Tskhinvali to protect Russian citizens. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had said 1,500 civilians had been killed in the fighting, a number Georgian officials have denied.
Both sides have claimed they control the city of Tskhinvali
Now Russian forces have begun to target areas outside of Tskhinvali, a move that Georgia has called “a full-scale military invasion.” The attacks in Gori targeted military bases where troops had been massing to help existing troops in South Ossetia.
After declaring a state of war Saakashvili pulled all 2,000 troops out of Iraq to bolster its defense against Russia.
