Zimbabwe Power-Sharing Talks End with No Deal in Place

Atlanta, Ga. 9/1/2008 1:05:34 AM

Talks between Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party and main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party have once again ended with no firm deal in place as both sides left talks in South Africa.

The two sides held power-sharing talks over the past two days yet the question of how MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai would fit into the current government continued to be the sticking point. President Robert Mugabe has said Tsvangirai would be given the office of prime minister but would have no real power in that position.

According to reports both sides have agreed that Mugabe should remain president and Tsvangirai should become the country’s prime minister but it is the function of their office that remains deadlocked. While the ZANU-PF wants Tsvangirai to serve more as an honorary member of the government it is the MDC who feels Mugabe’s presidency should be more ceremonial while the decisions of government fall to Tsvangirai.

The power-sharing talks were sparked by Zimbabwe’s latest presidential election in which Tsvangirai won the first round but officials declared he had not secured a large enough majority, forcing a second round. With less than a week before the June election Tsvangirai removed himself from the race declaring Mugabe was using violence to suppress and intimidate MDC supporters.

While Mugabe won the presidency, an office he has held since 1980, the ZANU-PF lost the balance of power in the House of Assembly and last week the MDC elected Lovemore Moyo as speaker, the first time an opposition party has controlled the position.
