Russian Troops Withdraw from Georgian Port City of Poti, Maintain Presence in Separatist Regions
Adhering to an EU-backed truce, Russian military forces have withdrawn from the Georgian port city of Poti and moved north to the breakaway region of Abkhazia.
As part of the EU deal Russia had agreed to remove troops from inside the undisputed territory of Georgia but there has been no firm agreement on the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
It was in South Ossetia that the conflict between Georgia and Russia unfolded as Georgian troops entered the breakaway region on Aug. 7 in an attempt to seize control. Russia responded by sending bombers and troops to the area, driving Georgian forces back.
For five days Russian and Georgian forces clashed with Russia pushing deep inside Georgian territory.
Following the end of the war a peace deal was made that stated both sides would return their troops to their positions prior to Aug. 7 but Russia maintained a military presence in both South Ossetia and Abkhazia as well as a buffer zone declaring they were protecting the rights of those citizens.
Russia was blasted by the international community for violating the “territorial integrity” of Georgia yet President Dmitry Medvedev along with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin maintained their position.
Russian parliament voted to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia and Medvedev has formally done so, setting up diplomatic ties with each.
