The
road to South Africa’s presidency appears to be clear for ANC leader Jacob Zuma
as early results from Wednesday’s general elections have shown his party to
have what many believe to be an insurmountable lead.
Turnout
for the election was said to be comparable to the last general election held in
2004 and with about a third of the votes counted the ANC is said to have about
65 percent while its closest rival, the Democratic Alliance, has pulled in just
17 percent.
While
the ANC victory appears to be clear they might fall short of the two-thirds
majority that would have given them the power to make constitutional
amendments. Controlling the country’s parliament will enable the ANC to elect Zuma
as South Africa’s newest president.
Zuma
has been the subject of controversy for some time as he was facing corruption
charges up until two weeks ago when state prosecutors opted to drop the charges.
Opposition to Zuma have expressed concern that if the ANC retained a two-thirds
majority in parliament then they would change the constitution to prevent new
charges being filed. Zuma has denied such a plan.
