ANC Wins General Elections in South Africa, Falls Short of Two-Thirds Majority
The final results of South Africa’s general elections have been released and the ruling African National Congress has won but they failed to reach a two-thirds majority which would have given them the power to make changes to the country’s constitution.
With the victory the path becomes clear for the ANC to elect their leader, Jacob Zuma, as president once parliament convenes. While the ANC secured 65.9 percent of the vote their support fell by nearly 4 percent from the 2004 vote.
The Democratic Alliance grabbed 16.66 percent of the vote to finish second while the newly formed Congress of the People collected 7.42 percent.
ANC supporters downplayed the significance of failing to reach a two-thirds majority, hinting they had no intention of trying to change the country’s constitution yet many opponents expressed concern that the ANC would make changes to protect Zuma from facing future legal charges.
Two weeks prior to the election corruption charges filed against Zuma had been dropped. Those charges have been denied by the ANC leader who has claimed they were politically motivated.
