The
World Health Organization has declared a global flu pandemic, its highest alert,
following an emergency meeting in which it was declared cases involving the
swine flu virus (H1N1) were still on the rise.
According
to the WHO the increase in swine flu cases involved Australia, Chile, Japan and
the UK.
Since
its first outbreak in Mexico in April the swine flu has spread to 74 countries
with more than 28,000 cases and 141 deaths, the majority of deaths occurring in
Mexico.
While
the WHO raised its alert to its highest level they were quick to point out that
they did not necessarily believe that H1N1 would result in a dramatic death
toll. At the onset of the swine flu virus there had been fears that it could be
as deadly as the last flu pandemic, a virus that killed more than one million
people in 1968.
Those
fears seem to have been calmed as WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told BBC “It was
believed that the next pandemic would be something like H5N1 bird flu, where
you were seeing really high death rates, and so there were people who believed
we might be in a kind of apocalyptic situation and what we're really seeing now
with H1N1 is that in most cases the disease is self-limiting.”
Despite
fulfilling all the requirements to be labeled a pandemic the H1N1 virus is
producing more cases of mild illnesses rather than fatal outcomes.
