Japan and South Korea Call for UN Sanctions to be Applied Against North Korea
Japan’s Prime Minister Taro Aso and South Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak have called for stricter implementation of the recent UN sanctions placed on North Korea after declaring the communist nation posed a serious security threat to the region.
Aso and Myung-bak met in Tokyo to discuss the issue of North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and the UN Security Council’s response which placed tighter restrictions on the country. Earlier this month the UN Security Council agreed to tighter restrictions against North Korea which included the inspection of ships, a more aggressive ban on weapons sales and tougher financial measures.
Those restrictions were imposed following several rounds of nuclear and missile tests conducted by North Korea which brought strong condemnation from the international community. While UN Resolution 1874 was passed which implemented those restrictions both Japan and South Korea have insisted the resolution needs to be followed by the participating countries.
Aso, speaking after his meeting with Lee, stated, “North Korea's nuclear and missile developments are serious security threats and absolutely cannot be accepted.” He also stressed the importance of China taking a more active role in pressuring North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions, a belief Lee said was imperative to future peace talks.
Both leaders stated that a nuclear North Korea would never be tolerated yet the isolated nation at the heart of the debate has warned any attempts to interfere with their nuclear interests will be viewed as an act of war.
