Yemenia Airways Plane Crashes off Comoros Islands, 1 Child Found Alive
A Yemenia Airways flight that was carrying 153 passengers
to the Comoros Islands crashed in the Indian Ocean early Tuesday morning. As rescuers
searched the wreckage from the Airbus A310 in waters off the town of
Mitsamiouli, they found a young child alive among debris and dead bodies.
The child, the only known survivor of the crash, was
taken to a hospital. “One child is alive and we hope to find more,” says
Captain Abdulkhalek al-Kadi, the chairman of Yemenia Airways. No details on the
child’s age or condition were released.
Flight 626 left Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, at 9:30 p.m. GMT
and was bound for the Hahaya airport in Comoros’ capital, Moroni. The plane
approached the Hahaya airport around 1:30 a.m. and tried to land, but couldn’t.
The plane made a U-turn and then crashed into the ocean. It is unclear why the
plane could not land.
Kadi blames the crash on bad weather. “It was high seas
and windy weather,” he explained.
The crash is the second involving an Airbus plane in a
month. On June 1, and Air France Airbus A330 crashed off the coast of Brazil. All
228 passengers died.
