Somali Civilians Killed by Mortars Fired by Government Forces
At least 12 Somali civilians were killed on Sunday after government forces fired mortars at Islamist insurgents who had attacked the presidential palace in the capital Mogadishu.
According to reports the majority of mortars hit abandoned houses but at least three homes occupied by civilians were leveled, accounting for the deaths.
The moderate Islamist government in Somalia has been under constant attack by hardliners who have been attempting to overthrow President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. Somalia has appealed for additional peacekeeping troops to be stationed in Mogadishu and that appeal has apparently been answered as Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke told journalists, “We welcome the support of the recent AU heads of states summit in Libya for the government... and we have a firm pledge for the increase of the AU peacekeepers.”
Currently the 4,300 peacekeeping troops inside Mogadishu are forbidden to pursue or attack the insurgents and can only use force in self-defense but that could change if additional forces are brought into the city.
