School Shooting at University of Memphis Leave Football Player Dead

Atlanta, GA 10/1/2007 8:41:49 PM

Classes at the University of Memphis have been cancelled Monday after a football player was fatally shot late Sunday night on the school's campus.

Taylor Bradford, 21, of Nashville was shot in the chest and pronounced dead a short time later at the Regional Medical Center. The school newspaper, the Daily Helmsman, identified the victim.

Police say the shooting happened on campus near a dorm around 10:15 p.m.  According to investigators the victim got into his car after he was shot and drove away.  He then hit a tree at Central and Zack Curlin Street.

The victim was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition and later died.

The University of Memphis main campus is closed today and tonight.  The Administration building is open as well as the campus school, grades 1 through 6.

Bradford was a junior at the U of M and a defensive lineman for the Tigers football team.

There were no immediate arrests.
