David Rockefeller Pledges $100 Mil to Harvard University

Atlanta, GA 4/26/2008 3:59:00 AM

David Rockefeller has pledged $100 million to Harvard University. The retired banker and philanthropist’s donation is the largest in the school’s history.

The university released a statement on Friday saying that Rockefeller made the donation “to increase learning opportunities dramatically for Harvard undergraduates through international experiences and participation in the arts.”

The 92-year-old grandson of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller was a member of the Harvard class of 1936. “Harvard opened my eyes and my mind to the world,” Rockefeller says. “Harvard provided me with an intellectual framework to understand what I was seeing and experiencing that has stayed with me for my entire life.”

Nearly $70 million of the pledge will go to undergraduates to learn more about different cultures. The $30 million left will go to “hands on” learning experiences in the arts.

“This is a magnificent act of generosity from an extraordinary friend of Harvard,” said the president of Harvard, Drew Faust.
