Newsweek Released Annual Top High Schools List on Monday

Newsweek Magazine released its annual list of the top high schools in the United States on Monday.

BASIS Charter in Tucson, Arizona moved up five spots from last year to take the No. 1 spot on the list. BASIS Charter ended the two-year streak of Talented and Gifted in Dallas, which dropped to No. 2.

BASIS Charter and Talented and Gifted are followed by Suncoast Community (Riviera Beach, Florida), Science/Engineering Magnet (Dallas), and Stanton College Prep (Jacksonville, Florida) in the top five.

Dallas and Jacksonville both had two schools in the top 10.

Preuss UCSD (La Jolla, California), Academic Magnet (North Charleston, South Carolina), Paxon School of Advanced Studies (Jacksonville, Florida), Oxford Academy (Cypress, California), and International School (Bellevue, Washington) round out the top 10.

International School made the biggest jump after being ranked No. 160 in 2005 and No. 57 in 2006 to being ranked in the top 10.

The Top High Schools list includes 1,300 high schools across the country, based on a specific methodology that includes the amount of AP, IB and Cambridge tests available at each school.
