MLB Scores: Pujols Homers in Fifth Straight as Cardinals Top Marlins
Albert Pujols hit a home run for the fifth straight game and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for the second straight night to beat the Florida Marlins 6-4 and moved within one game of .500 on the season.
Pujols staked the Cardinals to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run blast off Marlins starter Scott Olsen. For Pujols it was a record for consecutive games with a home run and was his 30th round-tripper of the season, making him the only player in major league history to hit at least 30 home runs in each of his first seven seasons.
The blast also put Pujols within three home runs of Dale Long, Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr. who each hit home runs in eight straight games.
Miguel Olivo cut the Marlins deficit to one with a home run off Braden Looper in the top of the second but the Cardinals got the run in the bottom of the fifth with a solo blast from Yadier Molina.
Florida managed to get the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh after Mike Jacobs singled home a run and Jeremy Hermida hit a two-run homer off Ryan Franklin.
The Cardinals managed to plate three runs in the home half of the seventh. Molina doubled home Scott Rolen and Jim Edmonds followed with a two-run bomb off Olsen.
After Russ Springer pitched a scoreless eighth Jason Isringhausen came on in the ninth to record his 25th save of the year and hand Florida its eighth straight loss.
