Chicago Cubs Trade for Craig Monroe, Bolster Roster for Playoff Push
The Chicago Cubs acquired Craig Monroe from the Detroit Tigers on Thursday in an effort to bolster their roster as the push for the playoffs begin.
Monroe was instrumental in leading the Tigers to the World Series last year but the 30-year-old left fielder has struggled in the 2007 campaign hitting just .222 and striking out a remarkable 94 times in 343 at bats.
For the Cubs Monroe should provide some help in the outfield and could be instrumental in games in which the face a left handed pitcher. While Monroe’s overall stats have been awful this year he has produced a .302 average with 22 RBIs against southpaws.
With Alfonso Soriano still recovering from a strained right quadriceps Monroe could find himself in left field for quit a few games in a Cubs uniform. He is due to report on Friday. Heading into Thursday the Cubs held a one game advantage over the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.
Detroit will pick up a player to be named later in the deal.
