Teen Stabbed Grandmother 93 Times, Shot Her With Crossbow

A Lake Wales, Florida boy has been charged with first-degree murder for brutally killing his grandmother just to upset his uncle. Police say Gloria Helfrich, 67, was beaten with a wrench, stabbed 93 times and shot in the head with a crossbow Tuesday by her 19-year-old grandson, Jasper Aristotle Smiddie. Smiddie locked Helfrich’s body in her bedroom and spent the evening eating dinner and watching TV with his uncle, who was unaware Helfrich was dead.

"Gloria was stabbed 93 times: 58 stab wounds in the back, 34 in the head, and one in the face. Then subsequent to leaving the room, after Jasper inflicted this terrible, terrible injury to his grandmother, he comes back into the room and decides to hit her in the head with a pipe wrench," Sheriff Grady Judd of the Polk County Sheriff’s Department said.

According to Judd, Jasper originally planned to kill his uncle, but decided to make him grieve the death of Helfrich instead. It is unclear why the teen wanted to hurt his uncle.

Police found Helfrich’s body Wednesday after receiving a call from Smiddie’s father, who said the teen had called him and confessed. Smiddie was arrested at his girlfriend’s home.
