Ohio High School Shooting Leaves 5 Students Wounded, 1 In Police Custody

An early morning shooting at a high school near Cleveland, Ohio left five students – reportedly four girls and one boy – wounded. Authorities have not identified the male student who opened fire in the cafeteria of Chardon High School in Geauga County, but have confirmed the teen is in custody and his weapon has been recovered. Witnesses said a teacher chased the boy out of the cafeteria after he fired several rounds.

“We are on scene and can confirm that a SWAT team is out there, making things secure and, of course, conducting the preliminary steps of the investigation with the local authorities that called us," a spokeswoman for the FBI's Cleveland division told ABCNews.com.

Local authorities received a call about the shooting around 7:45 a.m. Chardon High was put on lockdown while police searched the area for the gunman. Geauga County Sheriff Daniel McClelland said the teen was found “some distance from the school” where he had turned himself in to a bystander.

Three of the wounded were airlifted to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland while the remaining two were taken to Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. At least one of the students is said to be in serious condition.

All schools in the Chardon School District have been closed.
