John McAfee, a cyber security pioneer who created the McAfee anti-virus software, is wanted for questioning in San Pedro, Belize. Authorities in the Central American country say the multimillionaire is suspected of killing his neighbor, American expatriate Gregory Faull.
"We are looking for him in connection with the murder," says San Pedro police department assistant superintendent Vienne Robinson.
Robinson says a second suspect is in custody, but has not been charged. The suspect has not been identified.
Faull, a California builder, was found dead in his home on Sunday by housekeeper Laura Tun. It appears the 52-year-old died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. An autopsy is being conducted. Faull had recently complained to police about McAfee firing guns and keeping at least 6 noisy dogs on his property.
Shortly after Faull’s murder, 67-year-old McAfee reached out to tech news site Wired to proclaim his innocence. He even speculated that the killer was actually going after him and not Faull. “I thought maybe they were coming for me. They mistook him for me. They got the wrong house,” he said. “He’s dead. They killed him. It spooked me out.”
McAfee told Wired he was hiding out on his property when police arrived Sunday afternoon. He claimed to have buried himself in sand and covered his head with a box while they searched his house. McAfee is now hiding out in another house.
“Under no circumstances am I going to willingly talk to the police in this country,” he told Wired. “You can say I’m paranoid about it but they will kill me, there is no question. They’ve been trying to get me for months. They want to silence me. I am not well liked by the prime minister. I am just a thorn in everybody’s side.”
A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Belize tells FoxNews.com that McAfee has not contacted them for help. “I can confirm that embassy consular and security staff are in touch with local authorities,” said spokesman Eric Heyden. “If required and if he so requests, Mr. McAfee will have available to him all consular services normally accorded an American citizen.”
McAfee has been in Belize since 2008. He was working on launching an herbal antibiotics company.
