The New York City Police Department announced Wednesday the arrest of 30-year-old Naeem Davis for the “subway push” death of a Korean man. Police spokesman Paul J. Brown said Davis, a homeless man who may be mentally ill, was charged with second degree murder and depraved indifference after he made statements that implicated him in the horrific crime that left 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han dead at the 49th Street subway station. Witnesses also identified Davis in a lineup.
Davis was known in the area by sidewalk vendors who often hired him to run errands. He has a criminal record that includes minor offenses like peddling. No other details about Davis were immediately available. Police took Davis into custody Tuesday afternoon about a block from the 49th Street station.
Han died Monday after Davis shoved him off the platform and into the path of the southbound Q train. Han attempted to climb back onto the platform, but the train hit him and he became wedged between the platform and the train. He was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital.
Before shoving Han, Davis had been walking around the platform talking to himself, according to witnesses. He suddenly approached Han and demanded that Han “stand in line” for the train. A female passenger caught part of the confrontation on video. Police released the video and asked for the public’s help in identifying Davis.
