Newly released court documents about the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut reveal it took shooter Adam Lanza less than 5 minutes to fire 154 rounds, killing 20 children and 6 staff members before he turned a weapon on himself. The documents also reveal that Lanza, 20, had a gun safe in his bedroom at his mother Nancy Lanza’s home. Over 1,400 rounds of ammunition were discovered at the house. A holiday card for Adam from his mother contained a check for buying a gun.
After the release of the documents, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy cited the case as a reason to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines. “We knew that a disturbed individual entered a school and fired 154 rounds in less than 5 minutes, killing 20 innocent children and 6 dedicated educators. We knew that he had ready access to weapons that he should not have had access to. We knew that these weapons were legally purchased under our current laws. We knew he used 30-round magazines to do it, and that they allowed him to do maximum damage in a very short period of time. And we now know that he left the lower capacity magazines at home,” he said. "This is exactly why we need to ban high capacity magazines and why we need to tighten our assault weapons ban. I don't know what more we can need to know before we take decisive action to prevent gun violence. The time to act is now."
Lanza shot and killed his mother at home before forcing his way into Sandy Hook and opening fire on staff and students on December 14th. He committed suicide at the scene. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
