Los Angeles Police Believe 72-Year-Old Man in Custody is Infamous Westside Rapist

Los Angeles police may have solved one of the city’s longest cold cases as they have announced that a 72-year-old man now in custody is the infamous Westside Rapist, a man who terrorized LA suburbs throughout the 1970s and 80s and is suspected in as many as 25 murders.

John Floyd Thomas Jr. is now in police custody after investigators linked his DNA to five murders attributed to the Westside Rapist and further DNA testing has been conducted on a number of other cases believed to be related.

Thomas was in and out of prison between 1957 and 1983, serving time for a spate of crimes including burglary and rape. The wave of rapes and murders associated with the Westside Rapist coincided with his time in jail. After the city was plagued by a string of rapes and murders through most of the 1970s things stopped in 1978 when Thomas was jailed for rape. After his release in 1983 the wave of attacks surfaced once more.

In 2008 Thomas was forced to submit to DNA testing as part of California’s program to keep on file individuals convicted of sexual crimes. That DNA evidence was then found to match evidence found at several unsolved crime scenes. He was arrested on March 31 and charged with two murders but now investigators believe the case against him could involve more than two dozen victims.
