Kate Hudson awarded apology and undisclosed amount in libel case against British edition of National Enquirer.

The growing popularity of pursuing libel suits against U.K. publications has paid off for Kate Hudson. The star of Almost Famous and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was issued an apology and an undisclosed amount in her case against the British edition of the National Enquirer.

Hudson, the daughter of actress Goldie Hawn, took exception to the tabloid’s claim that she was “way to thin” and looked “like skin and bones.” Simon Smith, Kate’s U.K. attorney, called the allegations “deeply offensive and embarrassing” and implied that his client had “endangered her health by deliberately starving herself.”

"The allegations that I sued over were blatantly false, and I felt I had no choice but to set the record straight by challenging them in court," said Hudson. The verdict handed down by the High Court in London concurred.

Those allegations were made in an October, 2005 edition of the publication under the title "Goldie tells Kate: Eat something! And she listens!" Both Hudson and Hawn denied the confrontation ever took place. Hawn went on to state that she has never expressed any concern over her daughter’s weight.

Publishers of the tabloid apologized to the Golden Globe winning actress for "the deep distress and acute embarrassment" the allegations had caused.
 
Victory for Kate follows the recent success of other stars in libel cases against U.K. publications. While the U.S. courts require proof that a false story was run knowingly and maliciously Teri Hatcher, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Moss have taken advantage of U.K. laws that place that burden on publishers.
