In what has been regarded as one of the best classes of Hall of Fame nominees, Pro Football will be welcoming six men into the hallowed halls in Canton, Ohio.
Troy Aikman, Harry Carson, John Madden, Warren Moon, Reggie White and Rayfield Wright will be formally enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame today.
As a first ballot inductee, Aikman compiled an impressive career over 12 years. The first player drafted in the 1989 draft, Aikman led the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories including back-to-back titles in 1992-93. The Cowboy quarterback played in 165 games threw for 32,942 yards and 165 touchdowns. The six-time Pro Bowl participant won 90 games in the ‘90’s, the most of any quarterback over a decade in league history.
Named to the All-NFL Rookie team in 1976, Carson became an anchor of the New York Giants defense as an inside linebacker. Carson was elected to the Pro Bowl nine times from 1976 to 1988. He recorded seven tackles in the Giants Super Bowl victory in 1986. With the addition of Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks the Giants had arguably the greatest trio of linebackers in NFL history.
John Madden began his coaching career in 1967 as a linebackers coach for the Oakland Raiders. Within two years he became the head coach and led the Raiders to a 12-1-1 record and an AFL Western Division title. Madden never experienced a losing season in the ten years he led the Raiders. For coaches with 100 or more victories, Maddens .759 winning percentage is the highest of all time. Madden’s Raiders won the Super Bowl in 1976. He is regarded as the greatest football analyst of all time and has won 14 Emmy Awards in his career in the booth.
Warren Moon led the Edmonton Eskimos to five Grey Cup titles in the CFL joined the NFL in 1984. Over the course of his 17 year NFL career Moon threw for 49,325 yards and 291 touchdowns. In 1990 Moon registered nine 300 yard games. At the time of his retirement Moon ranked third in all time passing yards and fourth in touchdowns thrown. Moon will be the first African-American starting quarterback to ever be elected into the Hall of Fame.
The minister of defense, Reggie White was the fourth overall selection in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft. White was named All-Pro 13 times in his 15 year career. In 1985 he was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. White earned 13 consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl. White retired as the NFL's all-time sack leader with 198. He was named to the NFL's All-Decade Teams of the 1980 and 1990s, the NFL’s All Time team, and was voted first-team All-Pro 10 times in his 15-year career. White was a member of the 1996 Green Bay Packers when they won the Super Bowl. Reggie White died in 2004.
“Big Cat” Rayfield Wright played in five Super Bowls and was elected to the All Decade team of the 1970’s. Wright was drafted in the seventh round by the Dallas Cowboys and earned first or second team All NFL honors from 1971-1976. Wright was selected for six Pro Bowl games over the course of his 13 year career.
The 2006 Hall of Fame induction will be known not just for those enshrined but for the talent that didn’t quite make it to the podium. Among the noted men not making it in this year: Steve Atwater, Cornelius Bennett, Todd Christensen, Mark Clayton, Richard Dent, Mark Duper, Russ Francis, Irving Fryar, Kevin Greene, Ray Guy, Charles Haley, Michael Irvin, Ed “Too Tall” Jones, Chuck Knoz, Dexter Manley, Art Monk, Jim Plunkett, Reggie Roby, Joe Theisman, Derrick Thomas, Thurman Thomas and Herschel Walker.
