Warren Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, flown back to Utah to face charges of felony sex crimes.

Arrested a week ago in Nevada after being on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list since May, Warren Jeffs was flown back to Utah earlier today to face charges that include arranging marriages between underage girls and older men.

The 50-year old Jeffs assumed leadership of the polygamist sect after his father, the former leader passed away in 2002. The 10,000 members that comprise the sect live mostly in Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona. The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FCJCLDS) split from the Mormons over a century ago when polygamy was dropped by the mainstream church.

Jeffs had dodged authorities for over a year since he was charged in Utah and Arizona with felony sex crimes. The prospect of arresting Jeffs at the sect’s headquarters was abandoned when it was believed it might endanger the lives of church members.

Nevada Highway Patrol arrested Jeffs after pulling over a Cadillac Escalade in which he was traveling. He will be held at the Purgatory Correctional Facility in Utah pending his court appearance.

Warren Jeffs is believed to have 40 wives and nearly 60 children.
