Week three of the NFL season brought milestones, record-setting performances and overall leadership from a trio of veteran quarterbacks.
Brett Favre became the second NFL quarterback in history to throw for 400 career touchdowns in the Green Bay Packers 31-24 victory over the 0-3 Detroit Lions. Favre threw for 319 yards and joined Dan Marino as the only other NFL quarterback to join the 400 club. The 36-year-old Green Bay quarterback added another two touchdown passes to bring his career total to 402, needing just 18 more to tie Marino’s record.
The Washington Redskins were able to celebrate their first victory of the year after a 31-15 beating of the winless Houston Texans. The story of the game was Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell who set an NFL record by completing his first 22 passes of the game. Rich Gannon’s old mark of 21 was eclipsed when Brunell found wide-receiver Santana Moss for a six-yard gain in the third quarter.
Donovan McNabb paced the Philadelphia Eagles over the San Francisco 49ers 38-24. McNabb threw for 296 yards and two touchdowns and the Eagles improved to 2-1 while the 49ers dropped to 1-2. Bryan Westbrook ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles who led 24-3 at halftime.
In other games,
The New York Jets moved to 2-1 despite allowing 475 yards of offense to the Buffalo Bills. The 28-20 victory dropped the Bills to 1-2 on the year. Chad Pennington threw for 183 yards and one touchdown.
John Kasay kicked four field goals and the Carolina Panthers avoided an 0-3 start by defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-24. The Bucs are now 0-3 and in danger of seing their season slip away after only three games.
The Denver Broncos went into Foxborough and shut down the New England Patriots 17-7. The Broncos, 2-1, used Tatum Bell’s 123 yards on the ground and Jake Plummer’s two touchdown passes to hand the 2-1 Patriots their first loss.
Peyton Manning threw for a touchdown and ran for another as the Indianapolis Colts improved to 3-0. The 21-14 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1), was locked up 7-7 at halftime.
The Baltimore Ravens used a 12-point fourth quarter to comeback and defeat the Cleveland Browns 15-14. The Ravens have started the year off 3-0 while the Browns are now 0-3. Matt Stover kicked a 52-yard field goal with 20 seconds left to cap the Ravens comeback.
Daunte Culpepper earned his first win in a Miami Dolphins uniform as the new QB led the 17-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans. The Dolphins improved to 1-2 and the Titans continue to struggle, falling to 0-3 on the year.
Kurt Warner made everybody forget about his three interceptions and instead focus on his fumble with 1:48 to play as the Arizona Cardinals dropped to 1-2 after losing to the 2-1 St. Louis Rams 16-14.
Rex Grossman guided the Chicago Bears to a 19-16 victory over the Minnesota Vikings keeping the Bears perfect on the year. The loss for the Vikings was their first on the year.
Carson Palmer threw four touchdown passes as the Cincinnati Bengals went into Pittsburgh and defeated the Steelers 28-20. The Bengals are now 3-0 and the Steelers fell to 1-2. Ben Roethlisberger continued to struggle in his comeback, throwing three interceptions.
The Seattle Seahawks flew to a 42-3 lead on The New York Giants and secured a 42-30 victory when it was done. The Seahawks are now 3-0 while the Giants dropped to 1-2. Matt Hasselbeck threw for five touchdowns while Eli Manning threw three in a losing effort. Both quarterbacks threw three interceptions.
