Biomethanol, named "bio" because it is derived from a renewable resource, has the same chemical properties as conventional methanol. One of the advantages of biomethanol compared to conventional methanol is that it reduces fossil fuel and greenhouse gas emissions. Challenges:

In most cases, the production cost of biomethanol is higher than the cost of gray methanol made from natural gas and higher than the cost of methanol made from coal. Especially in the context of rising energy prices, the cost pressure on biomethanol is increasing. According to Methanex's research, the unit production costs of different production companies vary due to different raw material selections, different production processes, different enterprise sizes, and different technical levels. In 2021, the production cost of biomethanol will be approximately US$455-1013 per ton.

Most advanced renewable fuel plants have relatively high capital costs and face financing difficulties. Even if the project successfully implements technology application and reduces and allocates technical and commercial risks, it will still be difficult to obtain financing for commercial scale promotion. Biomethanol plants require large areas to collect biomass to maintain supply and are typically smaller than current world-scale methanol plants.

In the long term, biomass will be able to meet most of the global energy demand, but there are some limitations, including issues such as land availability, competition with other crops (including food crops), impact on soil quality, soil erosion, Demand for water and fertilizers, biodiversity issues, land tenure, and emissions of pollutants to air and water.
