Close-Up TV News recognizes Brookhaven Academy for its vision to revolutionize education through a global focus.
Since 2007, Brookhaven Academy (http://www.ebrookhaven.org) has asserted itself among the leaders in quality private education by providing a positive and progressive learning environment for its children. Lead by its founder, Bruce Huang, Brookhaven Academy has sought to challenge the complacency of our educational system through a more diverse, inclusive curriculum, as well as higher standards of teacher accountability.
“More important than hiring a highly accredited teacher is finding a person with a true passion for learning, a passion for children and education,” says Huang. “The teachers at Brookhaven Academy all have a passion for learning and for children, as well as being accredited, educated and experienced teachers.”
Huang’s formal background was software development and information technology. He left an executive position with IBM to become an entrepreneur, developing three successful IT companies. His experience teaching leadership classes to business graduate students inspired him to start a school for younger learners.
“I want to do the same thing with Brookhaven Academy that I’ve done with my other companies: I want to make a teacher a millionaire,” says Huang. “It’s the most important job there is and I want to change the whole culture in the industry.”
Changing that culture requires a focus on nurturing emotional intelligence, says Huang. An encouraging and inclusive learning environment builds their self-esteem and improves their capacity to learn.
“When should we start teaching emotional intelligence? Can that be taught?” asks Huang. “A child’s learning environment has the most substantial impact on their life from ages two to six. We should use that time to build a stronger foundation for their future learning experiences.”
Still, according to Huang, introducing students to new cultures is just as important as learning about numbers and colors. For that reason, Brookhaven Academy is trilingual, teaching students English, Spanish and Chinese.
“It’s about more than just the diversity,” says Huang. “We live in a global economy and children need to be aware of the different cultures, customs and economies around the world. That’s what we’re trying to do with Brookhaven.”
