Close-Up Talk Radio Spotlights Therapist Sylvia Simonyi-Elmer
Kingston, Ontario – Therapists and psychologists certainly have their hands full with the increasing diagnosis of anxiety and depression in today’s world. There are many methods of treatment and in most cases, curing someone is a long grueling process. The method of Sandplay Therapy has been increasingly used across the world as a tool for therapists and psychologists alike to locate sources for issues in patients.
Sylvia Simonyi-Elmer is a certified licensed international psychotherapist who specializes in treating adults and children of all ages. The majority of issues Sylvia witnesses range from emotional issues, depression, to anxiety. She has an impressively extensive educational background with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and a post-graduate diploma in Psychological Assessment and Counseling from the Institute of Child Study at the University of Toronto.
Sylvia went on to earn her Ph.D in Child Psychotherapy and Play Therapy. While interning, Sylvia became fascinated by Sandplay Therapy and completed further certification in Sandplay Therapy.
Sandplay Therapy was developed in the 1950s and 60s by Jungian therapist Dora Kalff in Switzerland based on the methods of C.G. Jung. The International Society for Sandplay Therapy (http://www.isst-society.com/) defines Sandplay as “a creative form of therapy using the imagination, “a concentrated extract of the life forces both physical and psychic.” (C.G.Jung) It is characterized by the use of sand, water and miniatures in the creation of images within a “free and protected space” of the therapeutic relationship and the sand tray. A series of Sandplay images portrayed in the sand tray create an ongoing dialogue between the conscious and the unconscious aspects of the client’s psyche, which activates a healing process and the development of the personality.”
Though Sandplay works both with adults and children, Sylvia admits it is much more difficult for adults to partake because they believe that they are beyond “playing”. The therapeutic alliance with adults makes them comfortable enough to utilize Sandplay in their treatment.
“The sand is the medium by which the unconscious and our imagination are able to flow. People with anxiety and depression suffer as they lose who they are. People use objects to create three-dimensional scenes in the sand. The sand gives people a glimpse of their inner potential. We can identify the scenes with feelings and sources of deep-seeded issues,” says Simonyi-Elmer.
By combining Sandplay Therapy with cognitive methods, Sylvia is able to successfully treat all of those in need. She admits it can be a tedious process. “Like an onion, you have to peel the many layers off. It’s not an overnight process. The therapist is the silent witness. I want sand to invite people. This is where they can let go and find answers from within themselves.”
Sylvia’s experience and extensive knowledge have earned her the privilege to serve on the board of directors for both, The International Society for Sandplay Therapy and The Canadian Association for Sandplay Therapy. Sylvia is a well-respected international instructor and runs her very successful practice in Ontario, Canada.
Sylvia Simonyi-Elmer will be featured on Close-Up Talk Radio with host Doug Llewelyn on Wednesday November 28th at 11am EST on www.blogtalkradio.com/closeuptalkradio. Listeners can dial-in at 347-996-3389.
