Close-Up Talk Radio Spotlights Richard Modlin
Huntsville, Alabama – Author, lecturer, naturalist, photographer, and traveler… The extraordinary life and career of Richard Modlin has enabled him to experience parts of the world that many can only dream of. As a retired professor and marine/freshwater biologist, Richard has studied ecological systems in some of the most fascinating places that Earth has to offer. Richard’s travels include trips to Africa, Europe, North and Central America, along with countless islands in the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Mediterranean Sea.
Richard’s extensive educational and professional background includes a Bachelor’s in Zoology and Master’s degree in Limnology from the University of Wisconsin. While working as a freshwater biologist in Connecticut, Modlin went on to earn his doctorate in Marine Ecology at the University of Connecticut. Professionally, Richard worked for the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab as a professor and marine biologist. Eventually, Richard was offered a senior fellowship with the Smithsonian Institute, which granted him with the opportunity to study coral reefs off the coast of Belize among other incredible research assignments. Richard also earned the Fulbright Research Scholar Award from the University of Lund in Sweden.
With over seventy published scientific and natural history articles, Richard shared his research on marine and freshwater invertebrates. After retiring, Richard took some time to continue traveling with his wife. Within a few years, Richard decided to follow his lifelong desire to become an author and share his wonderful accounts about his travels and experiences across the world.
“As a child, I was always fascinated by nature and writing about what I observed. I was fortunate to have a career that enabled me to travel and do what I love. I’ve always held on to my writer’s spirit and after retiring decided to act on it,” exclaims Modlin.
Richard’s debut work was the 2002 release of Malachite Lion: A Travel Adventure in Kenya. In this non-fictional book, Richard shares the accounts of his unplanned solo journey through Kenya and the Seychelles Islands. Readers can enjoy Modlin’s fascinating details of all that he experienced with East African culture and his encounters with exotic wildlife.
Modlin’s next non-fictional work, Chasing Wings: Birding Exploits and Encounters is a birdwatchers dream as Modlin shares many different personal encounters with birds from a wide variety of locations. Released in 2008, Chasing Wings was nominated as a finalist by ForeWord Magazine 2008 Book of the Year in nature writing.
Recently, Modlin completed his debut fictional novel set for release this summer. Modlin describing his new novel says, “Newfound Freedom is about two English brothers that experience a perilous Atlantic crossing and become embroiled at the beginning of the American Revolution. It’s a magnificent story of adventure.”
While working on the sequel to Newfound Freedom, Richard is currently the President of the Alabama Writers’ Conclave and on the executive board of the Huntsville Literary Association. In addition, Richard set up his blog site www.sandsquiggles.com, which he uses as a platform to present his short creative writing pieces while occasionally displaying work by others in his writing community.
