Cincinnati, OH – A college education is designed to prepare you for the real world, but when the party’s over the cruel transition begins. According to a recent study based on data from the Census Bureau, 53 percent of recent college graduates are jobless or underemployed, 1.5 million young people collateral damage of the Great Recession.
The stress that accompanies this transition can often interfere with the person’s ability to think rationally and function properly. Willa Boykin is the founder of Epiphany Love and author of Wisdom for Intrinsic Fulfillment, a manual for self- development aimed at college students.
“It’s all about a balanced lifestyle,” explains Boykin. “It’s about living on purpose. A balanced lifestyle is something you do on a regular basis and your heart has to go through a transformation.
Boykin was inspired to create Epiphany Love following a violent altercation with a co-worker. The incident made going to work each day an experience fraught with fear and anxiety. But Boykin overcame by staying true to the pillars of her balanced lifestyle: her belief in God.
“Discipline is a lifestyle for me,” says Boykin. “If you set aside some time each day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes, to spend time with God and humble yourself, the challenges you face throughout the day won’t stress you so much. You have a friend with you.”
That discipline, says Boykin, provides the foundation for the confidence you need to move forward. And that confidence is often what’s lacking. You have no way of proving your worth and you go through extended periods where. You can’t even prove it to yourself because you don’t have the opportunity to use your skills.
“Concentrate on moving forward,” says Boykin. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a giant step; what’s more important is that you continue to move forward, no matter how slowly. Steady is recommended. No matter how big the steps are you want to move forward and you want to be happy. When you take an evaluation of that day or that month or year, are you moving forward?”
