Close-Up Talk Radio Spotlights Richard Modlin

Huntsville, Alabama – Returning to the Close-Up Talk Radio experience is author, lecturer, naturalist, photographer, and traveler Richard Modlin. In the April 2013 feature, Richard shared his extraordinary life and career as a marine/freshwater biologist and retired professor. Throughout his career, Richard has studied ecological systems in some of the most fascinating places across the globe. Richard’s travels include trips to Africa, Europe, North and Central America, along with countless islands in the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Mediterranean Sea.

With over seventy published scientific and natural history articles, Richard shared his magnificent research on marine and freshwater invertebrates. After retiring, Richard took some time to continue traveling with his wife. Within a few years, Richard decided to follow his lifelong desire to become an author and share his wonderful accounts about his travels and experiences across the world.

“As a child, I was always fascinated by nature and writing about what I observed. I was fortunate to have a career that enabled me to travel and do what I love. I’ve always held on to my writer’s spirit and after retiring decided to act on it,” exclaims Modlin.

Detailing his many incredible experiences, Richard released two non-fictional works entitled Malachite Lion: A Travel Adventure in Kenya and Chasing Wings: Birding Exploits and Encounters. Readers can enjoy Modlin’s fascinating details of all that he encountered with East African culture and his encounters with exotic wildlife in Malachite Lion. In Chasing Wings, which nominated as a finalist by ForeWord Magazine 2008 Book of the Year in nature writing, Richard shares the encounters he shared with birds from a wide variety of glorious locations.

Recently, Modlin completed his debut fictional novel set for release this July 2013. Modlin describing his new novel says, “Newfound Freedom is about two English brothers that experience a perilous Atlantic crossing and become embroiled at the beginning of the American Revolution. It’s a magnificent story of adventure.”

Here is the official synopsis of Newfound Freedom, published by Hartside Publishing and will be available in bookstores, www.amazon.com, and www.barnesandnobles.com to name a few:

Jack and Ian Hollister cross the Atlantic in 1774 to carry on the family business in Boston. A storm forces their leaking vessel into Halifax. Securing passage on a coastal schooner, they continue the journey. Jack establishes camaraderie with the colonial crew. Ian considers them rebels. A hurricane forces the schooner onto the rocks off the coast of Maine.

Jack and the schooner crew attempt salvage of the cargo, but a Royal Navy frigate uses the broken hull for target practice. Seeing survivors, the frigate captain plans their capture, but flamboyant Dunkin and his pirates whisk the survivors to the temporary safety of their camp. Friendships are reestablished and new ones made. Jack and Ian meet Maire, the infamous female pirate leader and her sister.

While Jack, Maire and Dunkin are away, the royal marines raid the pirate camp and impress Ian and other able-bodied men and women into naval service. Jack, concerned with the loss of his brother, escapes, with his friends, to Machias and becomes embroiled in the first naval battle of the American Revolution. Aiding the militia, the HMS Margaretta is captured and her captain is killed. After the battle Jack is transported to Beverly, Massachusetts, and then on to Cambridge.

Imprisoned aboard the frigate, Ian spends the winter in Halifax harbor, contending with the vagaries of naval service and trying to prove his British aristocracy. His identity verified in the spring of 1775, Ian is released to his relatives in Boston not knowing the fate of his brother.

Jack remains unaware of what has become of Ian. With the aid of George Washington, he is secreted into blockaded Boston.

After a joyous reunion, the brothers learn that their father has terminated the Hollister business in Boston until colonial stability is reestablished. All are expected to return to England. Jack decides to remain. No amount of enticement changes his mind. To Ian’s dismay, Jack leaves Hollister House saying, “Tell Father I can be found in Cambridge—but not the one in England.”

While working on the sequel to Newfound Freedom, Richard is currently the President of the Alabama Writers’ Conclave and on the executive board of the Huntsville Literary Association. In addition, Richard set up his blog site www.sandsquiggles.com, which he uses as a platform to present his short creative writing pieces while occasionally displaying work by others in his writing community.

Richard Modlin’s feature with Close-Up Talk Radio continues on June 22nd and June 29th with host Jim Masters at www.blogtalkradio.com/closeuptalkradio. Both shows will air live at 12pm EDT.
