This season of Survivor is full of twists, something the players realized immediately when Jeff Probst gathered them on the beach and delivered the first twist – the returning players would be playing against their loved ones. Before they could get over the shock of the first twist, Probst delivered another. Each tribe had to immediately vote someone out. The veterans, or the Galang tribe as they are called, send Candice packing while the newbies (Tadhana tribe) send Laura packing. Probst then delivered a third twist – the women aren’t headed home; they are headed to Redemption Island to compete for a shot to return to the game. When that information sinks in Probst reveals yet another twist. The loved ones of two women voted out can choose to switch places with them. Rupert doesn’t hesitate; he immediately takes Laura’s place. Laura joins the Galang tribe. Candice and her husband decide to leave their positions as they are because Candice has a better shot at winning the redemption duels.
Galang quickly gets their shelter and camp in order. Tyson starts a fire with bamboo. Over at Tadhana, the newbies struggle with their shelter. They attempt to get a fire going but are unsuccessful. Culpepper initiates an alliance with four other guys. That gives them the advantage over the four girls.
For the first immunity challenge each tribe must choose three puzzle solvers and six people to go through obstacles in the ocean. The six people must make their way through the obstacles to a boat containing bags of puzzle pieces. They must take the boat back to shore and hand off the puzzle pieces to their puzzle solvers. The first tribe to solve their puzzle and raise their flag wins immunity. Tadhana gets off to a good start, but they lose their lead at the puzzle. Galang’s puzzle solvers quickly pull ahead and raise their flag first. That means the newbies are headed to tribal council.
Back at camp the guy alliance decides that the vote will come down to Katie, because she was horrible at the puzzle, and Marissa, because her uncle Gervase rubbed Galang’s win in their face. Marissa is sent packing to Redemption Island.
