Wrestling superstar Randy Savage, also known as Macho Man, died Friday after a car accident. According to reports, Savage suffered a heart attack while driving in Tampa, Florida. He lost control of his car, drove across a concrete median and crashed into a tree. The 58-year-old died of his injuries at Largo Medical Center. Savage’s wife of 1-year, Lynn Payne, was a passenger in the vehicle. She suffered minor injuries.
Savage, whose real name is Randall Mario Poffo, began his professional wrestling career in 1985 after several years of playing minor league baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox. He went on to become a seven time wrestling world champion and held 20 championships in all. Savage retired from wresting in February 2005. He occasionally accepted roles on TV shows and in films; most notably in the 2002 Spider Man film starring Tobey Maguire. His last film role came in 2008 in the animated Disney film Bolt. He voiced the character Thug.
Pro wrestler Hulk Hogan expressed his sadness over Savage’s death in a Tweet on Friday. "He had so much life in his eyes & in his spirit, I just pray that he's happy and in a better place and we miss him," Hogan wrote. "We miss him a lot. I feel horrible about the ten years of having no communication. This was a tough one.”
