American Idol’s youngest finalists ever – Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina – faced off for the last time Tuesday night. The night included three rounds. For the first, Lauren and Scotty reprised their favorite past performances. In the second round, the pair’s idols picked songs for them to sing. For the final round, Jimmy Iovine chose original songs, which will be the winner’s first single.
Scotty delivered solid performances in the first two rounds, but fell flat in the third. He kicked off the show with his rendition of “Gone” by Montgomery Gentry. His idol George Strait then selected “Check Yes or No” for round 2. Judges did not completely dislike his third performance. He sang “I Love You This Big,” but Randy Jackson questioned the wisdom of the song choice. Randy thought the performance was mediocre. Jennifer Lopez said he did an “amazing job.”
The judge’s agreed that Lauren Alaina may have secured the win with her third performance of “Like My Mother Does.” Her vocals were strong and the song likely moved fans and audience members. Lauren also delivered in the first two rounds and seemed to improve with each song. She sang Pam Tillis’ “Maybe It Was Memphis” and Carrie Underwood’s “Flat on the Floor.”
See who is crowned the new American Idol on tonight’s season finale.
