Musician Clarence Clemons passed away over the weekend nearly a week after suffering a stroke. A rep for Clemons confirmed the 69-year-old died Saturday of complications from the stroke the suffered on June 12.
Clemons’ music career spanned 5 decades and included collaborations with numerous bands and artists, including Aretha Franklin and Twisted Sister. He worked on 20 albums with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Clemons also formed his own bands, Temple of the Soul and Red Bank Rockers. He most recently worked with Lady Gaga on her current album, Born This Way. Clemons also had several film and TV credits, including the film “New York, New York” and the HBO show “The Wire.”
Clemons suffered numerous health problems in recent years. The musician underwent spinal fusion surgery and then double knee replacement surgery in 2008, but vowed to perform as long as he was able. "As long as my mouth, hands and brain still work I'll be out there doing it,” he said.
Springsteen paid tribute to Clemons in a post on his website over the weekend. "Clarence lived a wonderful life. He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage,” Springsteen wrote.
